Dancing with the Stars S34E2 Recap: Two stars exit the dance floor Tuesday night

In the second week of the new season of Dancing With the Stars we got some great performances, some fancy dances, and our first elimination. After a premier that featured no elimination, we got a double elimination in the second week. Let’s see how everyone did!

Top of the leaderboard

After the first week, two couples topped the leaderboard. The first was Robert Irwin, and partner Witney Carson, who turned up a 15 for their Jive. In Week 2, they danced a tango and earned a 22, tied for the highest score again. The other leader after Week 1 was Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Whitney Leavitt and partner Mark Ballas, who scored a 15 for their tango. This week it was a Cha-Cha, and they also earned a 22. That left both couples tied with 37 after two weeks.

Two other couples earned a 22 in Week 2. The first was Olympian Jordan Chiles and partner Ezra Sosa, who rebounded from a disappointing 10 in Week 1 to capture a 22 for their excellent jive in Week 2. The other was Leavitt’s co-star, Jen Affleck, who earned a 22 for her quickstep with partner Jan Ravnik.

A close group

With four couples tied at 22, there were four couples that posted a 21 overall in Week 2 to remain tight in the scoring. Chief among them was Hilaria Baldwin and Gleb Savchenko, who followed up a 14 in Week 1 with a 21 on their tango in Week 2. That gave them a total score of 35, third best among the 14 contestants. But that didn’t help them much, as we’ll see in a bit.

Alix Earle, the Social Media star, kicked off Week 2 with a jive to Lou Bega’s “Mambo Number 5” alongside partner Val Chmerkovsky. The dance earned a 21, giving them a two-week total of 34. Others earning a 21 included actress Elaine Hendrix and partner Alan Bersten, who performed a fun jive to “Hey Mickey” and singer Lauren Jauregui and Brandon Armstrong earned a 21 for their foxtrot.

The Bottom Three

At the end of the night, three couples were singled out for elimination. Among them were actor Corey Feldman and partner Jenna Johnson—who was the champion of Season 33. They scored a low of 15 on the night for their Cha-Cha to “Baby Got Back.” Also in the bottom three were former NBA star Baron Davis and partner Britt Stewart, who scored an 18 for their samba.

The final couple in the bottom three was Baldwin and Savchenko, despite sitting third in the overall scoring. It’s hard to tell if it was a red herring, or the votes aren’t there for Baldwin. The eliminations are based on a combination of the judges’ scoring and votes.

In the end, it was Feldman and Davis who were eliminated, bringing their time in the ballroom to a close. Both were gracious in the closing moments.

Still alive and dancing

One mild surprise was that Andy Richter and partner Emma Slater avoided the bottom three. They were tied for the bottom score coming into Week 2, but Richter showed some improvement in earning a 16 for their tango.

Actress Danielle Fischel and partner Pasha Pashkov are crowd favorites but mustered just a 19 for their Cha-Cha. Reality star Dylan Efron and partner Daniella Karagach looked painfully awkward at times during their samba but earned a respectable 20. In the final dance of the night signer Scott Hoying and partner Rylee Arnold scored an 18 for their Cha-Cha for the song “Blue.” Dancing With the Stars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
